A Comprehensive Guide To Quilt Wadding

When it comes to wadding for quilts, there are various options to consider, each with its own unique characteristics and purposes. It's important to choose the right wadding based on the desired outcome of your quilt project.

Let's take a closer look at some popular types:

Cotton Wadding: This classic choice provides a soft and breathable feel, offering a traditional touch to your quilts. Not only is cotton lightweight, but it also adds a cozy element, perfect for snuggling up on a chilly night. It is the preferred option by most people for baby quilts.

Polyester Wadding: Polyester wadding is the way to go for non-bed quilts. It has come a long way since the old days and now adds loft and a plush texture, creating a lovely effect. I always recommend polyester wadding for wall hangings.

Wool Wadding: Looking to add warmth to your quilts? Enter wool wadding! This marvellous option provides exceptional insulation, making it ideal for keeping you snug during those extra frosty winter evenings. With its moisture-wicking properties, wool helps regulate body temperature, ensuring maximum coziness.

Bamboo Wadding: Not only is bamboo wadding environmentally friendly, but it also boasts several desirable traits. The absorbent, antimicrobial, and hypoallergenic nature of bamboo make it a great choice, especially for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Bamboo also drapes beautifully - no stiff quilts here!

Additionally, there are blended waddings available that offer a mix of different fibres such as 80/20 cotton/poly and 60/40 wool/poly. The advantages of blended waddings include

  • Enhanced Durability: Blending fibres like cotton and polyester or wool and polyester can result in a more durable wadding. Polyester fibres provide strength and resilience, making the wadding less susceptible to wear and tear.

  • Reduced Wrinkling and Shrinkage: Polyester fibres have inherent wrinkle resistance and resistance to shrinking, which helps maintain the shape and appearance of the quilt over time. Blending polyester with natural fibres like cotton or wool can help minimise wrinkling and shrinkage issues.

  • Ease of Care: Blended waddings with polyester content are generally easier to care for. They tend to require less ironing and dry quicker than pure natural fibre waddings. This can be particularly beneficial for quilts that need frequent laundering.

  • Cost-effectiveness: Blended waddings can offer a more cost-effective option compared to waddings made solely from natural fibres. By combining different fibres, manufacturers can strike a balance between performance, durability, and affordability.

I hope this helps when you have to make your next wadding decision 😉
