Curvy Petals Quilt Along

WEEK ONE - FABRIC

OVERVIEW

If you’ve ever stood in front of your fabric stash (or a fabric shop shelf) wondering what on earth goes together - you're not alone. I have absolutely been there! I created this guide to help you feel inspired as you decide on your fabric for the Curvy Petals Quilt.

CHOOSE A COLOUR PALETTE

Start by thinking about the mood or feeling you want your quilt to have. Soft pastels? Bright and bold? Maybe solids? They can all work with this quilt so go with what makes you happy!

Tip: Take a photo of your fabric pull and convert it to black & white — it’s a great way to check for contrast and make sure things don’t all blur together.

FABRICS FOR THE CENTRE BLOCK

Your centre block is the starting point for the quilt. It's the focal point for your flower and given it's a big block I would recommend choosing something with a big print. You could even fussy cut something, making sure that it works on point.

YOUR PETALS

When thinking about the fabric for your petals think about something that complements the centre block but still pop on their own. I made a version of this quilt where the petals just didn't have enough colour and faded a bit more into the background than I would have liked. Lesson learned! You want them to have a strong enough contrast against your background to really stand out.

HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (HST’s) & CORNERSTONES

Again these create a nice contrast to your low volume background - they will form the other half of the HST’s with the low volume fabric. The contrast level is not so important here but they do create a lovely secondary pattern in the corners of the finished quilt so make sure there is some contrast. A solid or very small print works nicely here.

LOW VOLUME BACKGROUNDS

Low volume fabrics bring softness to your quilt and make the colours pop. Options to consider:

• Classic: one solid or subtle print throughout

• Scrappy low-volume: whites, creams, or pale pastels with tiny prints (tiny florals, dots, grids or text)

• Moody modern: try a dark background (like navy, charcoal, or deep teal) to make your petals really pop!

Avoid large or bold prints here — you want your petals to take centre stage.

CUTTING YOUR FABRIC

This week we will just be cutting blocks A, B & E.

For EACH BLOCK cut -

Colour 1 (Low Volume Fabric), cut:

• 4 x 5⅞” squares (A) - Be sure to check fabric layout provided on pages 11 & 12 of the pattern

Colour 2 (Half Square Triangles), cut:

• 2 x 5⅞” squares (B)

Colour 3 (Centre Block), cut:

• 1 x 7⅝” square (E)

Remember the more accurate you are with your cutting the squarer your finished quilt will be. Why not treat yourself to a new rotary cutter blade!

FINAL THOUGHTS

You don’t need the “perfect” fabric combo. You just need fabrics you love and are excited to sew with.

This quilt is meant to be playful, satisfying, and confidence-building — especially when it comes to curves! So trust yourself, experiment a little, and enjoy the process.
